This fantastic vintage barrette for hair is a nice accessory made of sterling silver with red garnet gemstones and a black opal. The barrette features three galloping unicorns, in different stances. From the profile each of unicorn's eyes are a 1mm red garnet. Their legs are in motion creating a realistic relief; the artist who made this one of a kind piece took much care to render the animals very precisely. This piece was made in the lost was casting method. At the end of the barrette is an oval opal that is very luminous. The opal measures approximately 1/4 of an inch and features dark blues, greens, pinks and yellows. You can see how it has been hand-fitted into the sterling silver. The whole piece shows incredible craftsmanship and even the simple clip on the back of the barrette has hand-made qualities that can be appreciated. The barrette is 3 inches long by 1 inch. It weighs approximately 28 grams.
This piece was acquired in the 70's from an artisan at a Renaissance Faire. It is in great condition for its age.
