This 22k gold ring contains a striking ancient coin in a wirework band that mirrors the antiquity of the coin. The coin has the face of either an eagle or falcon, with the Greek letter K next to it. The mount has an opening so that the coin can be viewed from behind as well, revealing an X on the back of the coin. The coin came from either Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome, though we haven’t been able to identify which, and has a patina that gives added depth to the image of the bird. The 22k gold band has wirework that was executed with a spectacular level of skill. There are three sections of wirework patterns within the band. Down the center is a section of wires that have been braided all the way around the band. The outer layers have twisted wire that create an outline and add another level of visual texture. The wirework displays the highest level of skill—some of the best we’ve ever seen. The band has a wonderful patina that adds even more glow to the high karat gold.
The band’s width is 9.8 mm. The circle containing the coin measures 11.2 mm across. The ring is unmarked and acid tests as 22k. The ring weighs 11.67 grams. The coin is ancient; the band is vintage. Circa 1970
