This 18k gold two-sided fob features a compass on one side and an engraved hardstone agate intaglio on the other, on a swivel so that either side could be turned to face forward when worn. The agate intaglio is impeccably carved, embellished with a lion holding a cross. Above it are the Latin words “Semper Fidelis” which translates to “Always Faithful.” Paired with the compass, these words make for a beautiful sentiment of knowing one’s true direction and being faithful to the course. The working compass has wonderful detailing to its black and red lettering. The intaglio and compass are held in a swivel that has a beautiful, symmetrical design, topped with a knot-like element that consists of three links. The swivel allows the intaglio to be turned face down to use as a seal. Circa the Victorian era, this would have originally been worn on a watch chain but now makes for a great pendant. It is rare to see a fob with such cool items on both sides, and we love that this pendant is like two different pieces in one.
The fob measures 1 1/8” x 7/8” (including the bail). It weighs 10.88 grams. There is some denting around the outside of the piece, appropriate for the age of the piece and adding to its antique beauty.
The piece is marked for Birmingham, 1887, 18k, and with the maker’s mark WHH.
