Sterling Silver Georg Jenson USA Gingko Leaf and Seedpod Brooch

$425.00
In a style that Georg Jenson’s work is known for, the body of this sterling silver brooch consists of swirling gingko leaves that intertwine in two lyrical swoops. A beautiful seedpod hangs from the leaves, still encased in its shell before it opens up to release the seeds. The seedpod dangles gracefully from the leaves, giving nice movement to the brooch.

Georg Jenson was a well-known Danish jewelry design house that was established in 1904. During World War II, when Denmark was under German occupation, American designers were hired to continue production of Georg Jenson pieces, which were marked as Georg Jenson USA. The pieces were designed by American silversmiths but included many of Georg Jenson’s design elements, creating an interesting overlap of styles that make Georg Jenson USA pieces particularly unique.

This brooch has an added layer of beauty that we love. The original owner of the brooch used moth balls in her drawers, which causes sterling silver to oxidize at a faster rate, giving it a beautiful dark patina. The brooch has the appearance of gun metal, and the matte surface of the brooch gives it a satiny blued silver. Because the patina was so perfectly uniformed, we decided to leave it on the piece.

The brooch measures 1 7/8” x 1 15/16. It weighs 12.85 grams. The brooch has a pin on the back with a safety latch. It is marked “Hand Wrought Sterling” and “Georg Jenson USA” which dates the piece to 1940-1947.
