This is a stunning smoky quartz family crest intaglio wax seal. Most likely from Victorian era Scotland, this wax seal would have been used for sealing letters.
This elaborate intaglio features a lion holding a sword, sitting on top of a crowned armor headpiece. The crown likely indicates family royalty. There are billowing flags around the shield center. The shield contains a horse-shoe, a Maltese cross and two arrows that point upward. There is also a horn and arrow crossing the back of the shield.
This is a sizable piece that weighs 44 grams and has an oval truncated design. It measures a little over 1” wide and is 1 3/4” tall. It’s a beautiful smoky quartz wax seal that would make an amazing gift or desktop ornament for your home!
