This is a beautiful gold filled Victorian mourning brooch with compartment for hair or picture. It has very small gold content but this piece radiates with a deep yellow color. This piece has delicate twisted wire work and a raised dome in the center. It forms into a flower-like symmetrical design. There also are some small dots of raised yellow gold in between the wire. Some of these have the smallest thin spots that have become a hole, and one is missing. You can see how this brooch was hand-made; the quality of work is quite special and this piece is very elaborate. Although the gold has some wear to it it is a very beautiful and original piece.
The brooch is 1 5/8" wide x 1 1/4" high, with fancy gold work and the original C clasp. The glass on the back is in a frame that is removable it is 1 1/8" wide x 7/7". This area was for a keepsake of a departed loved one, either for hair or a picture. Unmarked, this piece dates to the late 19th century.
