The standout features of this Art Deco ring are the beautiful Australian opal cabochon and the simplistic yet refined handmade platinum mount. The opal has intense color play in every color of the rainbow—a myriad of oranges, pinks, greens, blues, and purples are layered within the stone, each color revealing itself as the ring catches the light from different angles. The cabochon has a low profile, and the opal has a flat surface, held in place by four talon-shaped prongs. The platinum mount has two layers of reticulation in its carriage, beautifully pierced, the top level is stacked above the lower level like steps. When looked at closely, it is clear the mount is handmade. Circa 1920, this is a simple and stunning piece that highlights the natural beauty of an exceptionally gorgeous opal.
The opal weighs 5.5 of a carat. It measure 18.5 x 10.5 x 5 mm. The ring weighs 4.28 grams. It is marked on the interior PM and tests as platinum.
We’ve photographed the ring in both sunlight and studio light to show how the opal picks up different colors in different lighting situations. Still, it is impossible to capture the ring's vibrant color play in a photograph, and this piece is even more stunning in person.
