Circa 1890’s, this “In Memory Of” locket is the perfect locket to hold pictures of those who have left this world. On the front of the locket is a decorative border with bright cut work and dots of white enamel that frame a black enamel panel and a banner containing the words “In Memory Of”. The back is hand-engraved with a shield, fleur-de-lys, and angel wings. The locket opens up to reveal two panels for photos, with the original glass backed with finely ribbed black grosgrain. The space behind the glass has enough depth to hold pictures, or even a locket of hair.
The black enamel on the front of the locket has several nicks or chips from being well loved. The locket is unmarked and tests as 9k gold, and the bail is 14k gold. The locket is 1 3/4” x 1”, not including the oval bail which measures 5.5 x 7.5. Total weight is 10.25 grams.
