21 Karat Gold Mexican Peso Earrings From the Turn of the 20th Century

$1,250.00
These 21k gold earrings are Mexican pesos that were minted in the years 1898 and 1904. They bear the image of the Mexican eagle eating a snake, with the words “Republica Mexicana.” The Mexican eagle holds a snake in its mouth as part of the legend of Tenochtitlan, which is modern day Mexico City. The people were told by the gods to settle where they see an eagle devouring a snake, a symbol of Aztec heritage. On the back (not visible when worn) is a simple design of a wreathed denomination. A cute ball hangs from the bottom of each earring, adding a little movement. The earrings are a perfect token of a proud Mexican heritage.

The pesos used in these earrings are rare: only 9,845 copies of the 1904 peso were struck at the Mexico City Mint, and the 1898 peso has an even more limited mintage of only 5,193 coins struck at the Guanajuato Mint, making it a scarce and highly collectable coin.

Each earring measures 9/16” across and 13/16” from top to bottom (1 1/8” from the top of the wire). Combined, they weigh 3.9 grams. Unmarked, but acid test as 21k gold. The earring wires are 14k.

For pierced ears.
