This is a gorgeous 14 karat gold Victorian hair brooch. Orderly panels of tightly woven blond human hair sit between two beveled windows of carved crystal, which are held together by a gold frame setting. A beautiful piece of Victorian hair jewelry. Hair Jewelry either mourning or for remembrance was popular in the mid 1800's. Photography was not readily available, portraits were expensive, so these treasures were made so one could carry a small part of their loved one with them.
This brooch measures 1 3/4" x 1 5/8". It is in excellent condition and the clasp still works perfectly. It is not marked for gold content but has been acid tested to 14 karat gold. Circa 1880.
