14K Gold and Opal Etruscan Revival Drop Earrings

$950.00

These Etruscan Revival drop earrings, circa the 1940s, contain beautiful Australian opals set in an acanthus leaf pattern. The graphic cutouts, engraved lines, and twisted wire patterns are familiar Etruscan Revival motifs that create remarkable texture and detail. The opals have a white base with the myriad of color play that Australian opals are known for.

Etruscan Revival jewelry design was popular in the Victorian era, and here we see it emulated with a Mid-Century twist. The style dates to the 1800s when large excavation projects outside of Rome uncovered jewelry from Etruscan tombs. The Etruscans were master artisans, creating breathtaking pieces of jewelry through their use of gold wire and beading. The news of the excavation of these tombs, and the treasures contained inside them, spread throughout Europe. After this discovery, Etruscan Revival jewelry quickly rose to popularity.

True to Etruscan Revival form, these earrings have a stunning presence. They measure 1.5” from top to bottom, a nice size that, when worn, graces the neck. They have original earring wires that are elongated, offering support to the drop of the earring.

Each opal is 8 mm x 10.5 mm. The total combined carat weight of the two opals is 2.2. The earrings are unmarked and acid test to 14k. Together, they weigh 8.8 grams.
