This 10k gold pendant has the shape of a fraternity key, with a skull and cross bones on it as a Momento Mori. Latin for “Remember you must die,” a Momento Mori is meant to serve as a reminder of mortality—and to therefore remember to live life to the fullest.
The key has the name Nicholas C. Battafarano engraved on the back. Through our research we found that Nicholas Battafarano was a doctor who lived to be 91 years old. The key’s Momento Mori has an added layer of poignancy having belonged to a doctor, as a doctor must be dedicated to caring for their patients, while also remembering that each person is mortal.
Under the skull and cross bones, the letters HMC are engraved in a bold font. We were unable to identify the significance of the letters, but can assume it is the initials of a college or fratenity.
At 6.1 grams, the key has a nice weight to it that feels good to hold in your hand. The key measures 1 1/2” x 3/4”.
We love that this key is esoteric and intriguing. It makes for an edgier piece with a gothic feel to it, and as a powerful reminder of life and death.
