Victorian-era Organic Whitby Jet Brooch

This rare, deep black Whitby jet brooch from the Victorian era features scrolling lines with bulbous, curved abstract forms.
This truly gorgeous brooch is made of Whitby jet, which is an organic material much like ivory, found on the beaches of Whitby in England. The material of jet was once highly sought after, and is still expensive to this day. Jet was very popular as a gemstone for jewelry during the reign of Queen Victoria. She wore jet as part of her mourning dress after the death of Prince Albert. Since then, the dark deep black of jet has been associated with mourning and it became very fashionable in Europe. Its sombre color and modest appearance are very elegant.
This brooch has a beautiful sentiment. It is a fantastic antique, entirely hand-carved and hand-made, with a contemporary feel.
The circular brooch measures approximately 2-1/4 inches in diameter and it has about 1 inch in depth. It has a nice shiny look and feel. The clasp at back is a genuine antique! In great condition for its age. Circa 1880.
