Victorian-Era 12K Gold & Carnelian Fob with Portrait

$225.00
This unique antique was originally a watch fob but can also be worn as a fashionable pendant. This Victorian piece is 12 karat gold-cased and features a carnelian gemstone. The stunning carved carnelian intaglio depicts a portrait of a figure, in profile, rendered remarkably well and realistically. Traditionally, during the Victorian era, fobs were worn by gentlemen as a sign of status and elegance. The portrait featured on this luminous red-orange gem was most likely the self portrait of the owner of this fob. When pressed against a wax seal, his portrait, or in another way, his personal signature could be revealed and used to sign documents. The carnelian is shaped into a soft rectangular shape, approximately 3/8 of an inch by 1/2 an inch. The fob itself is 7/8 of an inch, including the bale, which has been incredibly carved and is faceted to catch light. Every detail on this antique piece is considered, and of the highest quality craftsmanship.
The piece weighs 2.4 grams and is in great condition, ready to be worn on the chain of your choice. Makes a wonderful unisex gift. This antique is an eye-catching piece!
