Victorian 12K Gold Cased and Carnelian Fob with Intaglio Portrait

$250.00

Originally a watch fob, this unique Victorian era antique can also be worn as a fashionable pendant. The fob is 12k gold-cased and features a carnelian gemstone, carved with an intaglio depicting a portrait of a mans profile. Traditionally, during the Victorian era, fobs were worn by gentlemen as a sign of status and elegance. When pressed against a wax seal, the intaglio is revealed as a personal mark or signature used to sign documents. The portrait featured on this luminous red-orange gem was rendered remarkably well and realistically—a classical example of a popular image of the era.

Every detail on this antique piece is considered, and of the highest quality craftsmanship. The carnelian is shaped into a soft rectangular shape, approximately 3/8” x 1/2”. The fob itself, which has been incredibly carved and is faceted to catch the light, is 7/8”, including the bail. The piece weighs 2.4 grams and is in great condition, ready to be worn on the chain of your choice.
