Victorian 18K Gold Filled Etruscan Revival Drop Earrings
This is a stunning pair of Victorian Etruscan Revival earrings. These drop earrings are approximately 2 1/2” long and hang about 2” from the ear. The earrings are approximately 3/4” wide an inch at their widest point. Although these earrings are unmarked I have tested them as 18k gold fill on a base metal. Together, these earrings weigh approximately 13 grams.
Etruscan Revival jewelry has a rich an interesting history. In the early 1800s there was a large excavation of Etruscan tombs outside of Rome. Within these tombs were pieces of original Etruscan jewelry. The Etruscans were master artisans, they created breathtaking pieces of jewelry through their use of gold wire and beading, colored gemstones and glass. The news of the excavation of these tombs, and the treasures contained inside them, spread throughout Europe. Etruscan style jewelry captured the imagination of the public and soon jewelers, particularly those in England, began to produce elaborate pieces of jewelry in the style of the Etruscans.
The earrings display beautiful twisted wire and a torpedo-like appendages topped a delicate hand engraved leaf motif. The body of the earring swings below and has lovely movement.
These earrings would make an unforgettable gift or fantastic addition to your antique jewelry collection!
