Micro Mosaic Bird Necklace with 18K Gold Bezel and Chain

This sweet bird micro mosaic is housed in a black onyx circular tablet. Tiny tesserae make up the the body of the bird with amazing detail.  The highlights of red on the head are a charming touch. Bezel set in 18 karat gold with a twisted wire work surround that is also embellished with bright cut engraving make for a lovely frame.  On either side or the gold frame a chain has been attached at a later date to make this gem a necklace. The chain is 18K gold like the frame and the entire necklace measures 16 1/4”. The framed micro mosaic element measures 3/4” x  3/8. The chain is marked Italy and 18k on the clasp. The framed micro mosaic element is from the 1870’s and is in excellent condition for it’s age. Made using a painstaking technique that involves tesserae, small pieces of opaque enamel glass. The tiny mosaics were first developed in the second half of the 18th century by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop. By the 19th century, numerous independent studios devoted to the production of these small keepsakes were established to meet travelers’ demands for souvenirs. Italian
