Early Victorian 12K Gold Teardrop Mourning Pendant
This is a gorgeous Victorian teardrop pendant. This piece is made from 12kt gold, graduated polished onyx, and three different pieces of hair woven together. The hair is secured underneath a beveled window of carved crystal that is framed by the beautiful rope like 12kt gold setting. The carved crystal is approximately 13.65mm long and approximately 7.80mm wide. Twenty graduated, polished faceted onyx stones surround the crystal that secures the hair in place. The smallest onyx stone is approximately 1.05mm in size, while the largest onyx is approximately 3.35mm in size.
On the back of the pendant are three sets of beautifully engraved initials, “WLG”, “WJLG”, and “JLG”. I imagine this piece contains the hair of the owners three children or relatives. Photography was not readily available, portraits were expensive; so these treasures were made to so one could carry a small part of your loved one, or loved ones, with you. This pendant was converted from a stick pin. Although this piece is unmarked I have tested it as 12kt gold. From bale to tip this pendant is approximately 1 1/4” long and approximately 1/2 an inch wide. The pendant weighs approximately 3.60 grams. Although I am selling this pendant by itself, I have the chain it is on listed as well. So this is only the pedant for sale.
This antique pendant would make an unforgettable gift or fabulous addition to your jewelry collection!
