This is an absolutely beautiful mother of pearl and brown velvet velour box, made in England in the 1860s. The lid features a mother of pearl portrait of a bearded man, carved in great detail. The iridescence of the mother of pearl is lovely and gives the portrait a nice glow. It is set in a velvet oval box, which opens to reveal an off-white silk lining on the inside.
This box is in very good condition, especially considering its age. Both the push button catch and the hinge are in excellent working order. Although the velvet is worn on the edges, it has a nice patina. This is a beautiful and unique Victorian piece.
It measures 2 1/5" x 2" x 1/2".
