Victorian Sterling Silver Engine Turned Vinaigrette Pendant

$425.00

This elegant vinaigrette from the mid-nineteenth century makes a wonderful pendant today. The scalloped rectangular vinaigrette was once used to carry around a pleasing personal scent, as a pick-me-up, or to cover unwanted smells. This locket pendant has undulating edges with an engine turned "wave" pattern decoration on both sides. Pierced scrolling foliate decorate the grille of the vinaigrette, and this opens up, revealing the space where once a sponge was kept. Today once can replace the sponge with lavender, spices, herb or the small item of your choice. The grille has a gold-wash along with the interior, which is luminous and catches the eye. On the inside too we find the Birmingham marks, and the date letter of 1876, as well as the sterling silver mark. The piece has a maker's mark for Colen Cheshire. This vinaigrette is monogrammed on one side. The pendant measures approximately 1-1/4 of an inch by 7/8 of an inch and when closed it is approximately 1/4 of an inch deep.

This rectangular vinaigrette is sold separately from a chain. It is a curious antique, a great conversation starter and unique item, but it also makes a wonderful decorative pendant or locket. It is ready to hang on a chain of your choice. We have many chains available through Kirsten's Corner should you need one.
