Joseph Willmore Sterling Silver Vinaigrette

A delicate sterling silver Joseph Willmore vinaigrette that takes the form of an elongated hexagon. It has an engraved foliate decoration on one side and a flower at the center on the other side. There is room for a monogram, or personal engraving on the face. The bale on the vinaigrette allows you to wear it as a pendant. It can be used to carry a personal scents, herbs, or any other olfactory item. During the early 19th century, the vinaigrette was an essential fashion accessory containing a personal scent, usually soaking on a small portable sponge. The oval cartouche measures 7/8"w x 5/8"d x 1/4"h. It weighs 4.7 grams. It has a gold standard mark as well as maker's marks on the interior. It has a Birmingham, England stamp that dates to 1814. The cartouche opens and closes perfectly and is in great condition. The interior grille with pierced circular openings has a gold wash. This vinaigrette came from a museum de-acquisition so it has been taken care of very well. Numbers on the interior denote the acquisition date, and reference numbers from the Chicago Art Museum. Joseph Willmore was one of the most prolific and renowned silversmiths to have worked in the famous Birmingham silver industry, and any of his silver work makes a great collector's item. A lovely piece for an antique silver collection.
