Victorian Grand Tour Micro Mosaic of Pantheon Pendant with 14K Gold Bezel

$725.00

This is a Victorian micro mosaic oval pendant of the Pantheon.  The Pantheon sits in the Piazza Della Rotonda in Rome. It is a former Roman Temple (temple of all gods) and since the year 609 has been a  Catholic church. This micro mosaic would have been a souvenir item from a "Grand Tour"  from the late 1800's.

This pendant was made using a painstaking technique that involves creating an image out of small pieces of opaque enamel glass called tesserae. The tiny mosaics were first developed in the second half of the 18th century by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop. By the 19th century, numerous independent studios devoted to the production of these small keepsakes were established to meet travelers’ demands for souvenirs. Measuring 1" x 3/4" and 3.7mm thick, with a thick 14 karat gold bezel made by Kirsten's Corner. It weighs 5.4 grams. This piece is in amazing condition with a striking blue surround, if you are a lover of the Rome this piece is for you.

The Grand Tour was a form of tourism and an educational rite of passage popular during the Victorian era, especially among the British. It became pleasurable and important to physically visit works of art or architecture. Italy was a popular place and often depicted as a "picturesque place".
