Georgian Era Intaglio Agate Gold Cased Fob

$325.00

An elegant late Georgian era agate stone fob, with an intaglio carved onto the face. The carved image that we find on the soft pale green agate stone is a portrait of a Roman figure, perhaps a dignified scholar, or a notable man of high honors or of importance. The fob is immaculately carved, with sharp lines and great detail. The sculpted figure in profile is rendered beautifully with various depths, adding dimensionality and texture to this piece. His muscles are defined and well as his high cheek bones. The agate is bezel set into a gold cased setting, with a minimalist scrolling element that leads to a bale where one can attach a chain. This fob makes a great pendant, a refined charm to add to a chain of your choice.

The agate measures approximately 1/2 an inch by 3/4 of an inch. The fob weighs a total of 8.7 grams and measures approximately 1 x 3/4 inches. The piece dates to the 1830s.

Traditionally, during the Georgian era, fobs were worn by gentlemen as a sign of status and elegance. When pressed against a wax seal, the fob became the personal signature of its owner, and would be used to sign documents. This fob pendant is a beautiful antique, in great condition for its age and a good addition to any antique jewelry collection. It is a rare find, a great object with a story, and a beautiful intaglio! This piece of jewelry is great for everyday wear and makes a very special unisex gift!
