This is a rare double sided brass stick pin that has been gold plated on one side and features a rectangular onyx on the other. The gold plated side has a hand painted dark red enamel fly, or insect in flight, surrounded by small blue flowers in a green shrub. The enamel is in great condition. The other side with the black onyx features a gold plated horse shoe and a 3mm paste diamond at center. It is quite an elaborate stick pin, with superb precision and lovely hand-made details. The stick pin measures 3-1/2 inches in length and the rectangular grass top measures 3/4 x 1/2 inch. It has a safety closing end on the end of the stick.
Stick pins have a rich and interesting history. In the early and mid-1800s, it was customary for upper class men to wear tie pins to secure their cravats. Women also took interest in these ornamental pieces and began to procure them for themselves. They began wearing stick pins to tie their scarves, however, the functionality of these items quickly evolved. Soon enough, these pins were worn on the lapels of coats and incorporated into hats. Stick pins rose to prominence in the Victorian era. To this day, collectors from around the world seek antique stick pins for their ornate detail and beauty.
