Edwardian 14K Gold Dragonfly Pendant with Garnet, Pearls, & Enameling

$1,400.00

A stunning dragonfly pendant, beautifully articulated, textured and studded. The dragonfly is a lovely work of art; made of 14 karat yellow gold it has a dark blue and green hand-painted enamel body, with tiny seed pearls on its fluttering wings, and two demantoid garnets for eyes. The green of the demantoids are highly refractive in nature making them a close match to the real multifaceted structure of dragonfly eyes! These measure approximately 1.8mm in size. They complement the dark forest colors on the body of the dragon fly, and with the variety of greens against the yellow gold, the insect appears extra luminous. The dragonfly was made circa 1910, during the Art Nouveau era. At this time we find lots of art objects that are crafted exquisitely, considering both form and function, inspired always by natural elements, flowers or animals. The dragonfly was a favorite subject during the Art Nouveau era, and today has come to symbolize self-realization and transformation. It is an inspiring creature that here hold our interest with its glowing form and precious materials. Its articulated wings are a real pleasure to activate and with it's carefully constructed hinges these flap up and down individually. The skinny legs and insect tail are equally considered to make this pendant a wonderful work of art. The pendant is ready to hang and comes with a generous bale. Pictured here it is worn around a short gold chain that shows off the piece. The pendant does not come with a chain but we have many chains at Kirsten's Corner.

The dragonfly measures approximately 1-1/2 inches by 1-1/2 inches. It remains unmarked but has been acid tested to 14K gold. Weighs 4.7 grams and is in great condition. This piece is a rare Art Nouveau object, a wonderful addition to any vintage collection.
